Liar, Liar

Late last year, I posted a series of running goals on this blog. Then I posted a series of races I planned to run this year.

I'm a liar. I haven't run any of the races, and I doubt I'll attain any of the goals I set for myself, either.

I don't care. I've been running without injury for three months (with a two-week holiday in the middle). I'm logging about 40 miles a week and that feels good. There's a 5K on the calendar next month and it looms like a 50 miler. I'd like to break 18:30. But I'm not sure I have it in me yet. And that's ok, too.

The big debate in my head is whether to sign up for the Pikes Peak Ascent. It'll likely fill up soon, and so the clock is ticking. On the one hand, I've never done Pikes, and I've always wanted to do it. On the other, I'm not sure I want do it in a year when I know I won't race to my potential. But I would like to get out for a few races, and Pikes will serve as motivation to get moving.

I've set Monday as a deadline for myself to set an end date for my indecisiveness. Hopefully the race will still be open by then.

  1. Sign up for the Ascent. At best, it'll give you the motivation to do some work. At worst, you'll get to soak up the race vibe while you climb a great trail up through some amazing terrain. Win-win.

  2. Clearly I'm a tough sell. Just went and signed up. Thanks for the pep talk:)

  3. I was looking for you at the Dam Run 5K a couple weeks ago. I didn't race it myself but accompanied my daughter instead. Actually had way more fun running with her than I would have had racing it. Let me know when you do decide to do a local race - it'd be nice to catch up. Or maybe we could just go running one of these weekends.

    1. Also, let me know if you need pacing/crew help at Leadville or any other 100s this year. I'm sure I'll head up after the ascent, and I'll be happy to help out as needed.

  4. There's a few of them I'm thinking about running soon. I'm signed up for something called the Rave Run on April 20th. I'm also contemplating a bunny hop race on March 30th and another race around Sloan's Lake April 6th. It all depends on how the next few weeks go. This is the first time I've strung together a month of solid running since last July, so I'm hoping to see some minor fitness gains soon.

    Either way, Jeremy, I'll drop you a line if/when I run a 5K.

    1. We'll probably be at the "Feel the Energy 5K" at City Park this Saturday. I won't be racing it myself (have Boston next Monday), but I'll be pacing my daughter. I raced it last year though and it was well organized and fun. Looks like good weather again this year too. Are you ready to make your 2013 running debut? This would be a good race for it. :)

  5. Ha. Not sure how motivated I am to pay money to run a 19:00 5K. I'm slowly regaining fitness and plan to show up at some summer races. Just don't quite have what it takes yet to compete.

Good luck at Boston. Hopefully the weather will be decent this year!
