16:59, 35:59, 1:19, 2:49

I've read that publishing your goals publicly improves the likelihood that you'll accomplish them.

So there you go: 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon goals, respectively, for 2013.

I can't emphasize enough how far from these goals I am right now. I struggled to run 40 miles last week, and I've lost a lot of fitness in the last two and a half months. But I've got 15 months to get there, and, assuming I get healthy between now and December, I plan to do -- consistently -- real workouts throughout 2013 (as opposed to just lots of aerobic running), which is something I haven't done in 16 years. I'm hopeful that this will produce real results.

If anyone is out there on the interwebs and has an interest in joining me for some of these harder-intensity runs, let me know. It'll be a few months yet, but it's always good to have someone pushing you when you're trying to run hard.

  1. Near the targets I am thinking of for what it is worth.

  2. Maybe we'll end up sprinting against each other at the end of a 5k some time...

  3. Thinking of setting my sites on a sub 3 hour marathon next year. Maybe in Boston. Anyway, it'd be fun to join you for some structured training. I'm sure I could learn a few things. 16:59 for a 5K sounds really fast. Good luck hitting your goals.

    1. Drew & Jeremy: It'll be a couple of months, but I will put out the bat signal when I start doing workouts. For now, I'm just focusing on making a full recovery from all the injuries I've accumulated the last few years.

  5. Holy crap, those are almost identical to either my PRs or goals for those distances. Hope you reach them. I doubt I'll ever race them, so I'll live vicariously though your accomplishments.

    1. My 5K and 10K PRs are actually faster than this (though they are 16 years old), so I know I am theoretically capable of getting there. I got the half marathon and marathon goals from a McMillan Running calculator, but they definitely sound a little quick to me, too.

  6. The way you were dialed in with your goals last summer leading to Pb, I have no doubt you can make a run at these goals next year.

Still think you need a 50K/M in the mix just for the hell of it. Like say Jemez or Lake City!

    1. Hope you're right, Jaime. I'd love to do Lake City, but maybe in 2014!

  7. I agree with Jaime, I don't think you need to turn your back on ultras. They're worth running just for the value alone - I like to think of race fees in terms of dollars per mile and you just can't beat a cheap 100 like Boulder or Moab. Just strap on some Hokas and forget about injuries - it's like running on bloated Care Bears :) What could be better than that?

  8. Bloated Care Bears? That's a great line. I bought a pair of Bondi Bs last year, but I have weird-shaped feet, and like most shoes, they didn't fit me. Throughout my running career (23 years now), I've been slow at recovery. I'm open to the possibility that a shoe could help with that, but it might just be that you're not typical, Jeremy.

I'll get back to ultras eventually, but I figure you lose speed before you lose endurance. Figure best to focus on speed while I'm still in my 30s.

  9. Dude, with a solid Pbville, you've got it!
To be uncomfortably honest in an effort to get you motivated, that was this year for me, with the exception of the marathon by a minute (which wasn't a fast course and it was raining); the half marathon time was a training run a couple weeks before the marathon, the other stuff was races. So FWIW, I think those numbers line up pretty nicely...
...and don't mean too much for 100M!

If you want feedback on workouts, post it and I think several of us will comment, but you know what you're doing. Uh, speedwork/tempo/long run, nothing revolutionary. If you watch Clark's blog, check out the general Tuesday/Thursday workouts recently and coming up. The Tues intervals especially were a great help last winter, and most tempos were 5 miles hills with just a few (2 or 3) longer ones.

    Have fun!

    1. I'm definitely well behind your fitness curve, Mike. I'm hoping to only be one year behind this time next year! But watch out for me in 2014, I'll be coming for ya.

Btw, my next post was inspired by your comment. I started to respond to explain my training philosophy in this comment, but then I decided it need its own separate post.
